Tess Elsworthy is the 2017 recipient of the Hide Hyodo-Shimizu Research Scholarship in association with the National Association of Japanese Canadians and Landscapes of Injustice. She is an MA student in the Department of History and Classical Studies at McGill University in Montreal studying under Laura Madokoro. Her thesis investigates the McGill Senate’s decision to officially exclude Japanese Canadian undergraduate students from admission during the Second World War. In examining this understudied episode in McGill’s history, Tess aims to further contextualize wartime anti-Japanese discrimination as it occurred in public institutions across Canada.
